Update: No wicker baskets will be introduced for the 2027 season.
Thanks to everyone who shared feedback today.
EDGA will be trialling a new basket design at selected 2027 Tour events.
This pilot looks at using natural-material catching systems, including wicker-based designs, as part of a wider push to reduce environmental impact and better fit into shared countryside spaces.
Why this is being tested
A lot of courses in England sit on public land. Parks, estates, and shared spaces where disc golf needs to sit alongside everything else.
Traditional metal baskets work well, but they are not always the easiest fit visually or acoustically.
This trial explores whether a more natural design can:
- Reduce visual impact on the landscape
- Sit more comfortably in rural settings
- Lower noise levels when discs hit the target
The goal is simple. Keep the game the same, but make it feel more at home in the places we play.
What the new baskets are like
The trial baskets use a wicker-based catching system in place of standard metal chains.
They are:
- Hand-finished using natural materials
- Designed to blend into the environment
- Slightly quieter on impact
Early testing suggests a softer finish on putts, with discs settling differently compared to metal chains.
Catch consistency may vary slightly depending on weave tension.
Players are advised to commit to the centre of the target.
What this means for players
Nothing changes in how you play the game.
Targets stay the same size. Layouts stay the same. Scoring stays the same.
This is a small trial focused on how the equipment feels and how it fits into the environment.
The baskets will only be used at selected events, and only as part of a pilot.
What happens next
We’ll gather feedback from players and TDs across the 2027 season.
That includes:
- Putting consistency
- Player confidence
- General feel on the course
We’ll review everything after the trial before making any decisions on wider use.
Try it and tell us what you think
If you play an event using the trial baskets, we want to hear from you.
Did it feel different?
Did it change how you putt?
Would you want to see it again?
We’ll share more once the pilot feedback is in.
