EDGA Formally Incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee

The English Disc Golf Association (EDGA) has completed a foundational governance milestone, officially registering with Companies House as a Private Company Limited by Guarantee.

Incorporated under Company Number 17481886 on 25 September 2026, this formal registration delivers the clear legal identity approved by members during the national transition vote earlier this year.

Why Incorporation Matters for English Disc Golf

Previously operating as an unincorporated association under the British Disc Golf Association (BDGA), EDGA now possesses an independent, modern corporate structure suited to the sport’s rapid nationwide growth.

Key practical benefits of this structure include:

  • Limited Liability Protection: Safeguards volunteer directors, officers, and committee members from personal liability when carrying out their duties.
  • Contractual Capacity: Allows EDGA to enter commercial agreements, secure long-term landowner partnerships (such as Forestry England and local councils), and hold multi-year insurance policies directly in the organisation’s name.
  • Community Asset Lock: As a company limited by guarantee without share capital, all assets, revenues, and equipment are locked strictly for reinvestment back into grassroots disc golf in England. There are no shareholders or private dividends.
  • Statutory Transparency: Annual accounts, officer appointments, and corporate filings are now publicly accessible through Companies House, providing full accountability to our members and external partners.

Adopted Articles of Association

Alongside incorporation, the Board has formally adopted the new EDGA Articles of Association. This governing document sets out transparent election procedures, board director roles, member voting rights, and democratic accountability.

Next Step: Sport England Recognition

Achieving incorporation is the essential prerequisite for official Sport England recognition as the National Governing Body (NGB) for disc golf in England.

EDGA is in active dialogue with Sport England’s national recognition team, who have confirmed they will be opening their formal recognition application process shortly. Official recognition will unlock major opportunities for English disc golf, including:

  • Eligibility for grassroots sports development grants and national funding.
  • Formal standing with local authorities, schools, universities, and regional sports partnerships.
  • Standardised coach education, safeguarding frameworks, and player development pathways.

We are currently auditing our policies against Sport England’s Code for Sports Governance to ensure our application is ready as soon as the portal opens.

We would like to thank our volunteer legal advisors, our board officers, and our membership for their patience and active support throughout this incorporation process.
