What is disc golf and how it works

Disc golf is a flying disc sport played in parks, woods and open spaces. Instead of hitting a ball into a hole, you throw a disc into a metal basket. The aim is simple – finish each hole in as few throws as you can.

Basic idea

  • Each hole starts from a marked tee area.
  • You throw towards the basket, then play your next shot from where the disc stops.
  • You count every throw, plus any penalty strokes, to get your score.
  • Lower scores are better, just like traditional golf.

Why people enjoy it

  • Easy to start, hard to outgrow.
  • Low cost compared with many sports.
  • Good for mixed ages and abilities.
  • Courses make use of parks and public green space.
